Greens' Lorna Slater unseats SNP’s Angus Robertson

Former Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater has toppled the SNP’s Angus Robertson in the race for Edinburgh Central.

The Greens won 12,680 votes in the constituency.

Labour came second with 8,098, while Robertson was third with 7,702.

Robertson was made the cabinet secretary for the constitution in the last Scottish Government, having been an elected as an MSP in 2021.

He was also the SNP’s campaign chief throughout this election.

This win is a significant victory for the Scottish Greens as it marks their first-ever constituency in the history of devolution.

Slater was co-leader of the party until last summer, where she lost out to current co-leaders Ross Greer and Gillian Mackay.

She was ranked first on the Edinburgh and Lothians East list so was almost guaranteed a return to Holyrood regardless of the outcome of the constituency vote.

Robertson is unlikely to be saved by the list as he was only placed fourth and the SNP has won some constituencies elsewhere in the region.

The SNP has held the Edinburgh Eastern, Musselburgh and Tranent, Edinburgh South Western, and East Lothian Coast and Lammermuirs seats.

The latter was a top target seat for Labour, who has had a disappointing election so far.

In a small bit of positive news for the party, incumbent Daniel Johnson held on to his Edinburgh Southern seat – beating the SNP’s Deidre Brock by nearly 5,000 votes.

Over in Edinburgh Northern, the Lib Dems have taken the new seat. This was notionally an SNP seat based on 2021 results. It was completely redrawn under boundary changes.

Sanne Dijkstra-Downie won it with 12,972 votes, ahead of the SNP’s Euan Hyslop on 10,479.
