Business Development Executive



Location: Edinburgh

Salary: DOE to £25k

Holyrood magazine is looking for a journalist with an interest in cutting-edge digital technology and how it impacts public service delivery.

You will work as part of the editorial team delivering the editorial content for both online and print platforms and working specifically on raising the profile of our Holyrood Connect brand

As a journalist with Scotland's foremost political communications company, Holyrood Communications Ltd, part of Dods Group, you will have at least two years’ experience working on a print/digital title and will have experience of writing news and features for both on and off-line along with online editing skills.

This is an exciting opportunity for a journalist who would relish the opportunity to work at the very heart of Scotland’s political community and enjoy the unique relationship that Holyrood has established with parliamentarians.

The successful candidate will be able to work to speed across both news and features and provide content for print and online to the high standards expected of our award-winning, fortnightly magazine and its supplementary products.

 We are looking for a journalist who has energy and drive, is a team player, can write accurate copy, work to tight deadlines, has a deep understanding of policy, politics and how government works, and wants to take a deep dive into the issue of how digital technology is helping deliver faster, more efficient public services.

The candidate will have:

  •  A recognised qualification in journalism
  • Experience of working on a print title as well as digital
  • Background or interest in digital technology
  • An understanding of Scottish politics
  •  An understanding of policy and the legislative processes
  •  The ability to balance a varied workload
  •  Well-developed communications skills
  •  An ability to work to deadlines
  •  An ability to write strong and accurate copy
  •  Meticulous attention to detail and first-class time management and organisational skills
  •  Experience of working individually and as part of a team
  •  Good contacts

Business Development Executive

Location: Flexible - expected in Edinburgh office 3 days a week

Salary: DOE

Closing Date: 5pm on Friday 6 May 2022

Due to expansion a new role has been created in our award-winning commercial team, selling a portfolio of political and public sector engagement solutions to both new and existing clients. This will be achieved by developing and implementing a sales strategy and programme of business development activities to deliver increased growth across our print, digital and event products whilst meeting sales targets.


  • Work across our portfolio of print, online and event solutions to identify and secure new business opportunities
  • Secure meetings with and present to senior management/board level prospects
  • Close business with prospects both face to face and over the phone
  • Evaluate latest developments in public policy and identify business opportunities
  • Retain and build a portfolio of clients
  • Meet and exceed individual and team revenue targets
  • Liaise with editorial and event delivery teams to deliver client campaigns to a high standard
  • Update and maintain company systems as appropriate (CRM, production schedules, etc.)


  • Driven, ambitious, self-starter with experience in a customer facing role 
  • Experience of working in a role with targets and KPI’s
  • Previous experience of working in events/media sales is beneficial but not essential
  • Experience with digital/social media sales is beneficial but not essential
  • Degree level education is beneficial but not essential
