University of the Highlands and Islands launches ‘all-inclusive’ PhD scholarships

UHI PhD studentship - UHI

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) is launching 26 PhD studentships for which both fees and living expenses will be paid.

The studentships begin in October and are available to international students as part of key EU funding for Scotland to drive innovation and address skills gaps.

Funded subjects include those relevant to Scotland, including digital technologies in healthcare, the history of distilling and whisky production, eco-tourism, salmon farming and the impact of the nuclear industry on British communities.

The European Social Fund and Scottish Funding Council are funding the places as part of Developing Scotland’s Workforce in the Scotland 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programme.

UHI principal Professor Clive Mulholland said the approach highlighted the unique nature of the institution.

“Since becoming a university in 2011, our reputation has been founded on our innovative approach to learning and our distinctive research and curriculum which are enriched by the people, natural environment, economy, culture and heritage of the Highlands and Islands and its communities,” he said.

“We are investing in our research capacity and are delighted to be able to offer these new studentships. The students will have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge alongside world-class researchers and be part of the next chapter of our story.”

The UHI brings colleges from Perth to Shetland together with highly specialised research institutes to offer a “broad tertiary education” over the region.
