Tory lead cut in new polling, but Theresa May still on course for crushing victory

The Conservatives have seen their massive lead over Labour cut in a fresh round of polls, but Theresa May still looks on course to substantially increase her Commons majority. 

The latest ORB survey for the Sunday Telegraph puts the Conservatives on 42 per cent, with Labour on 31 per cent, while a YouGov poll gave the Tories a 13-point lead.

While both show extremely healthy leads for May's party, the gap with Labour is not as pronounced as previous polls which had the Tories on leads of over 20 points.

Elsewhere ICM's poll for the Sun on Sunday suggests little movement, with the Tories in a commanding 19-point lead.

Jeremy Corbyn continues to fare badly on personal ratings, with YouGov's survey giving him a net satisfaction rating of -52, compared to +11 for the Prime Minister. 

And the Sunday Times reports that Labour's campaign manager Andrew Gwynne told colleagues the party's internal polling still has them 20 points adrift. 

A party source told the paper Corbyn was turning off traditional Labour voters in working class areas because he is perceived as being unpatriotic and supporting the IRA.

“It’s IRA, national anthem, IRA, national anthem. People bring it up totally unprompted. We have never seen such a visceral response. It’s the worst we’ve ever seen.”

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday today, May tears into her opposite number, branding him "weak, unstable, nonsensical and floundering".

She faces her first major broadcast interviews of the campaign today, with appearances on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show and ITV's Peston on Sunday.

Corbyn is trying to seize the initiative today with a 20-point plan to "transform the workplace". 

The proposals include an end to the public sector pay cap, banning all zero hours contracts and doubling paid paternity leave.
