Scottish Parliament votes to ban fracking

Scottish Parliament votes to ban fracking

The Scottish Parliament has voted to ban fracking in Scotland.

Parliament passed a motion – tabled by Labour MSP Claudia Beamish – to ban fracking, after Labour, Green and Lib Dem MSPS voted in favour, the Tories voted against and the SNP chose to abstain.

Beamish tabled an amendment saying Parliament “recognises that, to meet Scotland's climate change goals and protect the environment, there must be an outright ban on fracking in Scotland.”

The motion passed by 32 votes to 29, with 62 abstentions.

Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse argued Parliament should wait until after the Scottish Government’s consultation on fracking before making a decision.
