Nicola Sturgeon to set out phase three of easing lockdown

Scotland is expected to enter the next phase of the Scottish Government’s ‘route map’ out of the coronavirus lockdown.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will confirm the changes in a statement to parliament.

The reopening of bars and restaurants and the full resumption of tourism are expected to be among the announcements.

Phase three of the government’s plan will also involve people meeting up to two other households indoors and gathering in larger groups outdoors, Sturgeon has previously confirmed.

Changes to the two metre physical distancing rule in some circumstances may also come into force, allowing businesses to reopen more profitably.

Face coverings are to become mandatory in shops from Friday, as is already the case on public transport.

Hairdressers will be allowed to reopen from the 15 July and shopping centres from 13 July.

Further detail on reopening places of worship for communal prayer could be announced, as might more information on weddings and funerals.

Speaking at Wednesday’s coronavirus press conference, Sturgeon said she was “hopeful” that many of the planned changes could come into force.

She said: “We are not yet at the stage where we can say that we have virtually eliminated the virus within the community.

"But that prize is clearly attainable, and brings with it the prospect of a much brighter future and more sustainable recovery, including in particular the return of full-time education in August."
