Nicola Sturgeon opens new City of Glasgow College campus

A new £66m college campus was opened yesterday on the banks of the river Clyde by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

City of Glasgow College’s Riverside Campus will house the Marine Skills Centre and courses offered by the former Glasgow Nautical College, which merged with Central College and Glasgow Metropolitan College in 2010 to form City of Glasgow College.

The new campus forms part of a £228 million investment in the City of Glasgow College estate which will include a City Campus on Cathedral street, due to open next year.

“Scotland has a strong maritime history and now 10,000 students a year will be able to come to the Riverside Campus to continue that proud tradition,” said Sturgeon.

The new marine engineering workshop features Scotland's first shipping simulation suite, allowing students to experience the bridge of a super tanker, as well as nautical chart rooms and a ferry-sized ship's engine.

Principal Paul Little said the facility was the most advanced maritime college in the world. “We are making a significant contribution towards to the renaissance of Glasgow’s maritime industry,” he said.
