IT skills fund launched to encourage computing clubs for under-16s

Out of school clubs that encourage children to learn coding and computing skills are to benefit from a new £250,000 fund.

The Digital Xtra fund has been developed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Education Scotland and industry body ScotlandIS.

It is hoped the application process will encourage firms to offer new ways to encourage young people to take an interest in digital skills, particularly in areas where there is a shortage of provision, and will be inclusive of girls.

The fund has been developed in response to recommendations in the digital skills investment plan by SDS, which highlighted 11,000 well-paid jobs in the Scottish sector each year until 2020.

Claire Gillespie, key sector manager for ICT and digital technology skills at SDS, said: “This is not an additional funding opportunity for ‘business as usual’ – instead we are particularly looking for fresh and innovative ideas which are sustainable.

“We want to see projects that will support and inspire as well as showing value for money by making the most of local networks and partnerships.

“It is our aim to reach those young people who have not previously been able to access the many exciting and challenging projects which are already on offer in this fast moving area.”

The deadline for applications of grants between £500 and £50,000 per project is 17 June.
