Improvement Service chief executive Colin Mair announces retirement

Improvement Service chief executive Colin Mair has announced his retirement from leading the local government body.

Mair has led the Improvement Service, which is the national improvement organisation for councils in Scotland, since it was created in 2004.

He will leave his post on 31 March, with interim arrangements to be put in place, while the Improvement Service board makes longer term arrangements.

Commenting on his time at the helm, Mair said he was “a passionate believer in the role local public services can have in improving lives and opportunities” and that it had been “a real privilege to work in public service across the last 14 years”.

He continued: “Improvement is always a collaboration and I have been recurrently inspired by the passion and commitment to make things better shown by colleagues across Scotland’s councils and other public services.”

Councillor Alison Evison, COSLA president and chair of the Improvement Service board, thanked Mair for his vision during his time as chief executive of the Improvement Service.

She said: “He has brought enthusiasm, energy and leadership to the role. It has been a pleasure to work with him over this last year. 

“During his time as chief executive, Colin has made the core aims and objectives of the Improvement Service not just an aspiration but a reality and for this I thank him very much.”
