Donald Trump 'set to visit UK in February' despite spat with Theresa May

Donald Trump will “absolutely” visit the UK next year despite his recent spat with Theresa May, the US ambassador to Britain has said.

Woody Johnson said the pair's relationship was still “very, very good,” despite them falling out over Trump's decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim videos posted by far-right group Britain First.

May said he had been "wrong" to do so, provoking an angry response on Twitter from the president.

 

Speaking to the BBC, former NFL tycoon Johnson said the row was “probably misinterpreted”.

There have been calls to cancel the invitation for a state visit extended to Trump by the Prime Minister when she became the first world leader to meet him iat the White House after his inauguration in January.

But Johnson told Radio 4’s Today programme: "Absolutely, I think he will come… It hasn't been officially announced but I hope he does."

And he added: "I think it's a very very good relationship."

It is understood Trump is planning a low-key working visit towards the end of February.

The state visit is still due to go ahead, but no date has been set for it.
