Banks among companies hit by AWS internet outage

Banking apps, Snapchat and a range of other websites have been impacted by an outage from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The outage, which started on Monday morning, has left users logged out of essential services like banking apps, Ring doorbells and government services like HMRC.

On the AWS website, the company said that they were experiencing “increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services” and reported that 67 AWS services were facing delays or outages. The outage seems to have originated in the US-EAST-1 region, where a range of Amazon data centres are located.

The outage is currently affecting banking apps including Bank of Scotland, Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).

AWS is used to host a range of internet infrastructure services that allow companies and organisations to hire servers and computers to host and run their services. The service grew by 18 per cent in the second quarter of 2025, bringing in a revenue of $30.9bn.

According to Downdetector, an online site that tracks issues with online services, over 50 websites and apps were affected by the outage. These include the popular running app Strava, the language learning app Duolingo and the social media app Reddit.

At the time of writing, the most recent communication from AWS on the issue states that:  “We continue to observe recovery across most of the affected AWS Services. We can confirm global services and features that rely on US-EAST-1 have also recovered. We continue to work towards full resolution and will provide updates as we have more information to share.”
