Alex Salmond: No further action as Police Scotland ends assault probe

No further action is to be taken following a police investigation into a historical sexual assault allegation against Alex Salmond.

A complaint was made to Police Scotland after the Alba Party leader's death last year.

The former first minister died while attending a conference in North Macedonia in October 2024.

One month later, the national force said it had received a report of a “non-recent sexual assault”.

Following an investigation, it has now said it has ended its work on the matter.

Police Scotland said: “Following a report of a non-recent sexual assault, enquiries were carried out and no further action will be taken.”

Salmond was 69 when he died and his funeral was held at Strichen Parish Church, followed by a private burial.

The former SNP leader spent two weeks on trial at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2020, where he was acquitted of 13 sexual offence charges. These included attempted rape.

In a separate legal action, he was awarded £500,000 after suing the Scottish Government for the handling of its investigation into complaints of sexual misconduct made against him.

The process was found to be “tainted with apparent bias”.
