Associate Feature: Road safety — we all have a part to play

Here at Road Safety Scotland (RSS), we believe that road safety is a skill for life.

While we strive to ensure that all children and young people have equal access to road safety learning in nursery and school, the learning process should not end there.

We all use the roads on a regular, if not daily basis. Therefore, it is vital to ensure we do so as safely as possible.

Sadly, we know that road accidents still represent one of the highest causes of accidental death to our young people. However, we have a right to be protected and this should also apply in the road environment.

Having good basic knowledge of road risks and developing strategies to cope with these risks is fundamental, not only to helping protect ourselves, but others.

RSS have developed a suite of high quality road safety learning resources for children and young people (aged 3-18). Linked to Curriculum for Excellence, our resources provide a diverse range of learning opportunities which have been designed, in collaboration with education specialists, to be both interdisciplinary and immersive, helping young people to develop atti-tudes and behaviours which will keep them safe now and in later life.

In August, RSS launched a new look www.roadsafety.scot. Here you will find the full suite of RSS learning resources as well as a wide range of road safety advice pages and links to our thought-provoking public-ity campaigns.

However, as we go beyond the school years, it is important to ensure that we are all still playing our part. The ways in which we travel and use the roads change as we get older. However, the dangers still remain clear and present.

So remember, continue to make safety your priority, no matter your age. Always chose to lead by example and together, we can help protect each other and help make Scotland’s roads safer for all.
