No evidence of data loss in Glasgow City Council cyber-attack, experts say

Cybercriminals failed in their attempts to download data during an attack that impacted Glasgow City Council, a report has revealed.  

Carried out by cybersecurity experts, the report said they have ‘high confidence’ that the incident had been contained. 

Despite initial suggestions that data may have been leaked, experts found no evidence to suggest information was either stolen or encrypted.  

Last month, the council revealed some of its services had been disrupted, following a cyber incident involving servers of a third-party supplier, CGI. 

The investigation said the attack wasn’t targeting the council but instead was an “opportunistic attack on a third-party supplier”. 

Following the incident, the council isolated the affected servers forcing some of its day-to-day digital and online services offline. 

Many of its high priority services are now back online and a plan is underway to restore most of the remaining affected services by mid-August.  

However, a handful of applications dependent on external support, may take longer to recover, the council confirmed.
