Construction has finished on a new life sciences development centre in North Lanarkshire.

It is the first project to be completed with the help of Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal funding.

MediCity Scotland, which has been created with the support of over £1m of capital investment from the City Deal, is a medical technology development centre based at BioCity in Newhouse, North Lanarkshire, close to the M8.

MediCity is intended to provide a focal point for Scotland’s healthcare and medical technology sector, to develop links between private enterprise and academic communities, encourage commercialisation of innovations and increase inward investment.

It will bring together partners in academic institutions and business, including the universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde and the NHS, as well as large and small healthcare companies.

The facility aims to support up to 50 new life sciences businesses and 350 jobs over the next five years.

“As part of our ongoing success in supporting new businesses and creating jobs locally, North Lanarkshire Council is delighted to be contributing to the revenue funding of this exciting venture with funding of £439,000,” said Councillor Jim McCabe, leader of North Lanarkshire Council.

“MediCity will act as a focal point to encourage more medical-related enterprise to North Lanarkshire, and help to build up a centre of excellence.

“This is the first of a number of projects in North Lanarkshire supported by City Deal, which is a unique and exciting opportunity to invest significantly in public infrastructure, delivering real benefits for the economy and jobs now and in the long term.”
