Dominic Cummings: It's not surprising voters are angry at MPs over Brexit

Boris Johnson’s top adviser has warned MPs it is "not surprising" that voters are angry with them over their failure to deliver Brexit.

Dominic Cummings said parliamentarians had been "swerving all over the shop" since the EU referendum in 2016.

His comments, at a book launch on Thursday evening, are likely to further inflame the row between Downing Street and the Commons over the language being used in the Brexit debate.

Cummings also described delivering Brexit as "a walk in the park" compared to when he headed up the Vote Leave campaign.

The Prime Minister has come under fire for describing a law to stop no-deal as the "surrender act" and for claiming the best way to guarantee MPs' safety is to get Brexit done.

Cummings said it was "not surprising some people are angry" about the fact the UK is still in the EU more than three years after the country voted to come out.

"If you are a bunch of politicians and say that we swear we are going to respect the result of a democratic vote, and then after you lose you say, 'we don't want to respect that vote', what do you expect to happen?" he said.

"In the end, the situation can only be resolved by parliament honouring its promise to respect the result."

Asked if he was under pressure following the series of setbacks Johnson has suffered, including this week's Supreme Court ruling that his decision to prorogue parliament was unlawful, Cummings said: "This is a walk in the park compared to the referendum. We are enjoying this, we are going to leave and we are going to win."

His comments came just hours after he was confronted by Labour MP Karl Hopkins in parliament.

The shadow minister told the Number 10 aide that the language being used by the Prime Minister was "dreadful" and that he had received death threats.

Cummings, who was leaning on a pillar talking to a journalist responded: “Get Brexit done”.
