The Future of Infection Control

This event will examine the latest in effective infection control, look at the present threats to patients and examine how innovative techniques are being harnessed to combat the spread of infections in a variety of health and social care settings.

Infection control is not a concern reserved for healthcare professionals, but for everyone

Infection can have a detrimental and potentially life-threatening impact on the health and wellbeing of patients, and is equally important in community and clinical settings and ensuring a consistency of delivery of care is paramount.

The Scottish Government are committed to placing infection control at the heart of health and social care services, and have many frameworks and campaigns to aid this, including: the AMR/HAI 5 Year Strategic Framework; Healthcare Associated Infection LDP Standards; and the new Sepsis Awareness campaign which began in February 2018. However, it is down to health and social care services to ensure that they are delivering safe, sustainable and quality patient care, and with antibiotics failing to work for a fifth of patients who suffer an infection the importance of maintaining effective infection control standards has never been more important. 

Join Holyrood on 27 September as we examine the next steps for infection control in Scotland. We will bring together expert speakers who will reflect on three key areas; creating ‘safe’ environments, preventing rather than containing infection control and how staff can communicate more effectively to ensure that patient safety is the top priority.

  • An up-to-date understanding of the latest policy surrounding infection control
  • Examining infection control in different environments; in care, at home, clinical and for children and young people, and understanding how this intersects with multi-agency and multidisciplinary roles, and time pressures on staff
  • Delivering consistency across health and social care services to ensure patient safety; considering the implications for patient safety
  • Tackling antimicrobial resistance; understanding the Third National Delivery Plan
  • The role of patients and carers; how equipment is kept sterilised in the home, and the impact of non-medical staff visiting the home
