Salmond set to face Holyrood harassment committee

Alex Salmond will be questioned by MSPs later today following his claims there was a "malicious" attempt to damage his reputation by the Scottish Government and the SNP.

The former first minister will appear before the committee which is investigating the Scottish Government's botched handling of harassment complaints against him.

The session is due to begin at 12.30pm and is expected to last up to four hours.

In a written submission published earlier this week, Salmond said: “[I] am very clear in my position that the evidence supports a deliberate, prolonged, malicious and concerted effort amongst a range of individuals within the Scottish Government and the SNP to damage my reputation, even to the extent of having me imprisoned.”

The parliamentary inquiry is looking into the conduct of the government following two harassment complaints made against the former first minister, which led to the process being deemed “unlawful” and over £500,000 being paid in legal expenses.

Yesterday at First Minister's Questions, Nicola Sturgeon was asked by opposition MSPs whether the name of one of the women who made a complaint against Salmond had at one point been passed to his former chief of staff.

Asked by Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie whether that had happened, Sturgeon said: “To the very best of my knowledge, I do not think that happened.”
