Police Scotland investigation into Margaret Ferrier continues

A police investigation into MP Margaret Ferrier’s COVID-19 rule breaking journey from Scotland to London and back continues, with a report being sent to the Crown Office.

Police Scotland issued a statement on Wednesday saying that officers are conducting “further inquiries” after completing their initial assessment.

The announcement came as Ferrier made an intervention at Prime Ministers’ Questions by video link, despite having being urged to stand down as an MP.

Ferrier is the MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West and was suspended from the SNP after it emerged she had travelled to London and back by public transport while infected with COVID-19.

She admitted to travelling to London in September while displaying symptoms and before she received the results of her COVID-19 test.

Upon receiving her results, she travelled back to her home by train.

She was suspended from the SNP and has faced repeated calls from former colleagues and from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to resign.

Ferrier has so far refused to do so and continues to sit as an independent MP, taking part in House of Commons business.

On Wednesday a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have submitted an initial assessment of the circumstances to Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and are carrying out further enquiries under their direction.”

Last month the Metropolitan Police has said it was taking no further action against Ferrier, because the laws in England which require people to self-isolate after getting a test had not come into effect when she made her initial journey.
