J.K. Rowling: 'Nicola Sturgeon... destroyer of women's rights'
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling shared a selfie wearing a t-shirt criticising Nicola Sturgeon in continued opposition to proposed gender recognition law changes.
In the photograph, shared with her 13.9m Twitter followers, Rowling wears a t-shirt bearing the slogan "Nicola Sturgeon... destroyer of women's rights".
Tweeting the pic, she wrote: "I stand in solidarity with @ForWomenScotland and all women protesting and speaking outside the Scottish Parliament."
The comment referred to a rally held outside Holyrood this morning. Organised by For Women Scotland, it was held in opposition to the Scottish Government's planned reform of the Gender Recognition Act. Former Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont was amongst the speakers.
The first reading of the bill, which aims to make it quicker, cheaper and easier for transgender people to alter the sex on legal documents and removes the need for a medical diagnosis, is scheduled for October 27.
A parliamentary committee has backed the general principles of the bill, while the Equality and Human Rights Commission has raised concerns about the implications of its implementation.
Asked about Rowling's comments on Radio 4's Today programme, Sturgeon said: "I've spent my entire life campaigning for women's rights, and I'm a passionate feminist with lots of evidence behind that."
