Graeme Dey resigns as transport minister

Graeme Dey has resigned as Scotland’s transport minister, citing personal health reasons.

In a letter to the First Minister, Dey said he was “unable now to give this hugely important ministerial role everything it rightly requires and deserves”.

Accepting his resignation, Nicola Sturgeon said he would be welcome to return to government in the future.

Dey served in that role since May 2021, having previously been parliamentary business minister.

He will continue as a backbench MSP for Angus South, the area he has represented since 2011.

In his resignation letter, he said: “Regrettably, despite my continuing passion, I find myself unable now to give this hugely important ministerial role everything it rightly requires and deserves.

“It is therefore with regret that I am writing to resign from office as Minister for Transport in the Scottish Government.

“This is entirely for personal reasons relating to my health and wellbeing.”

Sturgeon said he was leaving government “with my thanks and best wishes” and he been a “highly effective minister”.

She added: “Circumstances permitting, the door will always be open should Graeme wish a return to government in future. In the meantime, I wish him well and know that he will continue to serve his Angus constituents with drive and commitment.”
