Politics Explained

Holyrood's annual Politics Explained conference has been running since 2007 and since then, we have been helping inform the public sector about Scottish politics so they may engage optimally with our political institutions.  In order that the event continues to be as valuable an experience as possible for our delegates and is responsive to your feedback, we're dividing it over two days.

You’ll learn key ways you can engage with the Scottish political system, gaining an understanding of successful communications and media engagement and how to lobby and influence.

The first day will be dedicated to how the Scottish Parliament works and the second day, we will focus on the Scottish Government.  Whether you come to one or both days comprising the event, they will both contain trademark incisiveness and plenty of opportunities to network with some of the most influential people in Scottish politics, that Holyrood is known for.

Day 1, Parliament Explained, provides an in-depth look behind the scenes of parliament and how you can lobby and engage with legislators. In this one-of-a-kind comprehensive analysis, from the unique position that only Holyrood can offer, we will guide you through everything you need to know about the Scottish Parliament including a tutorial about committees and outreach, a step-by-step guide to the legislative process, lobbying and engaging with these as well as a briefing about the roles of the key people who comprise our parliament.

We are still finalizing content for Day 2, particularly in light of the current pandemic as this will have profound effects on the Executive branch of governance, as well as a transformative impact on Scottish politics more generally.  But Day 2 will focus predominantly on the Scottish Government, and will seek to explain everything you need to know about the Government and how to navigate it to best affect your desired outcomes from it.

The wide range of speakers, combined with a varied selection of workshops, means that everyone will find something that is relevant to their organisation's needs, and the broad appeal of the agenda provides a great mix of people for networking and sharing ideas across sectors.
