Looking After Teacher Wellbeing

A year on from a report that found a half of teachers reported mental ill health due to work pressures, this event examines how to best look after teacher wellbeing and how that is linked to addressing the recruitment and retention challenges in Scottish education. 

The Importance of Teacher Wellbeing 

With such a sharp focus on improving attainment and closing the poverty-related gap, the importance of teacher wellbeing may be overlooked. A 2018 study found that a half of teachers reported mental ill health due to work pressures. Not only does this impact the retention of teaching staff, but an unhappy workforce is an unattractive one. This is one factor that has led to staff shortages in traditionally difficult-to-fill subject areas such as science, maths, and computing, but also in languages, physical education, and home economics. 

Children and young people are also impacted by teacher wellbeing. A teacher with high job satisfaction, positive morale, and who is healthy is more likely to give lessons that are creative, challenging, and effective – leading to improved student outcomes. Positive teacher wellbeing, then, is directly linked to improving attainment. 

Join us to hear from experts and policymakers as we examine the factors that impact teacher wellbeing, explore the measures that are being taken to support teachers, and ask what more can be done by the Scottish Government, local authorities, and schools.
