Improving Numeracy in Primary and Secondary Education

We are delighted to bring you this full day conference with focused sessions on primary and secondary education level insights. Half day rates are available so that you can benefit from the learning and good practice that is most relevant to you - these are concentrated on primary education (half day, morning) and secondary education (half day, afternoon). Full day rates are also available should you wish to gain a comprehensive view of the priorities and challenges facing attainment in numeracy throughout Scottish education.

This event will look at priorities and good practice in improving literacy levels in Scotland’s children and young people as well as the unique challenges of closing the attainment gap.

Numeracy as an attainment priority

Earlier this year, Scottish Government scrapped the long-standing Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy (SSLN) and replaced it with national standardised testing.

This change came in the face of the SSLN revealing a steady drop in the standards of numeracy within Scotland. Numeracy is a core life skill that remains at the very heart of the attainment challenge - so how can we ensure we are nurturing the skills needed for all of our learners to thrive?

Join Holyrood as we examine priorities and good practice in improving numeracy standards and scrutinise the unique challenges presenting at primary and secondary levels. Sessions will share insights and learning to equip you with the skills and understanding to ensure that all learners can reach their full potential.

Key issues we’ll examine with you

  • The significance of falling numeracy rates within Scotland
  • Numeracy within Curriculum for Excellence and STEM strategy
  • Good practice and sharing learning around what works
  • The relationship between numeracy and attainment
  • Ensuring teachers have the skills, equipment, and confidence to effectively support pupils
