Tennis star Andy Murray to promote digital health solutions in formal role at Scotland's Digital Health and Care Institute

Wimbledon winner Andy Murray has taken up a philanthropic ambassador role at Scotland’s Digital Health & Care Institute (DHI).

The Scots world number two tennis player will promote digital health solutions as part of his “personal interest” in wearable technology, he said.

DHI, an innovation centre which works with the NHS, 15 of Scotland’s universities and more than 50 companies to develop digital solutions in healthcare, will run an annual competition for innovative product ideas in schools which Murray will judge as part of the partnership.

Murray said the partnership had come about because he had developed an interest in monitoring his own health and sporting performance using technology.

“My partnership with the Digital Health & Care Institute has come about because I am really interested in how digital technologies can improve health,” he said.

“I obviously have a personal interest in that area because anything that can improve my own health will only improve my performance on court.  The work that DHI are doing is changing lives and solving some really important health and care challenges, at home and abroad, and I am proud to be supporting their work.”

DHI chief executive Justene Ewing said the institution was “delighted” to have the backing of a Scot with global recognition.

“We’re extremely excited to have Andy on our team and really look forward to building a strong relationship with him. His ongoing and increasingly active support for entrepreneurialism and innovation is a great asset.

“It’s inspiring to have someone of Andy’s profile and calibre committing to a partnership with us to promote digital health in Scotland, with all the potential benefits it can provide to the health and wellbeing of people at home and abroad,” she said.
