Sue Bruce, the council chief credited with turning the finances Aberdeen City Council around in just over a year, has been selected as the new chief executive for Edinburgh City Council.

The decision is expected to be approved by the council at a meeting on 16 September.

Council Leader Cllr Jenny Dawe said: "It is essential that we have the right calibre of chief executive for what is a difficult, but rewarding, role at the best of times. We have had a strong field and a rigorous recruitment process. Sue has emerged from that as our preferred candidate and I am confident that her outstanding knowledge, experience and leadership will be a real asset to the council as we deal with the budgetary and other challenges we face."

Bruce has worked in local government for more than 30 years and prior to her appointment at Aberdeen in 2008, was chief executive at East Dunbartonshire Council.

During her time at Aberdeen, Bruce has focused on the complete restructuring of services following concerns raised by Audit Scotland and the Accounts Commission about the council’s financial state and ability to deliver best practice. In June this year, she became the first public sector leader to receive the Prince’s Ambassador in Scotland Award.

Of her appointment, Bruce said: "I am delighted to be recommended to Council as the preferred candidate. I have enjoyed and valued my time in Aberdeen greatly, however this would have to be regarded as the pinnacle of my career. Edinburgh is a great city and a major European capital, and I am looking forward immensely to applying myself to the role."

Current chief executive Tom Aitchison will step down after 15 years service later this month.

"I hate doing interviews with people and saying 'Oh, I really like your paper...', but what I like about Holyrood magazine is that you take that good old fashioned journalist approach and tell the reader what is happening and what is going on in a factual way, and the interviews that you do give a really deep flavour of the person behind the politics."
