Scottish jobs booming Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 August 2007

Scotland is enjoying record high employment according to new statistics released today, with an unemployment rate of 4.5 per cent for the three month period of April to June.

The Office for National Statistics figures show in that period there were 2,554,000 Scots in employment, 24,000 more than in the previous quarter and 101,000 higher than the same period last year.

Scotland’s employment rate remains above that for the UK as whole, and the corresponding rate for the majority of other EU countries.

Commenting on the figures, Secretary of State for Scotland, Des Browne said:

“Today’s outstanding figures show that the Scottish labour market has never been in better health. This is testimony to the macroeconomic policies of the UK Government, which have delivered eleven consecutive quarters of above trend economic growth for Scotland setting the foundations for these excellent labour market results.

“There have never before been more Scots in work, or indeed fewer Scots out of work. This can be attributed to the successful social welfare policies such as the New Deal programme delivered by this Government. With these policies we are ensuring work opportunities for all so that the prosperity currently enjoyed by the UK can be shared by all.”
