New regulations banning
discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation in the provision of
"goods, facilities and services" were last night approved by the House
of Lords, by 168 votes to 122. Religious organisations will be allowed to discriminate, but faith schools will not be and neither will religious organisations when they provide public services under contract from a public body such as a council. Anyone discriminated against in any way that is banned by these regulations will be able to claim compensation in the sheriff court. From October 1, the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights will take the lead on advising people on how to proceed. Related news items: |
