Scotland’s largest water union, Unison, is using World Water Day to highlight the problems it says are caused by the privatisation of water services.

Unison is supporting the launch of a paper by the Scottish Trade Union Congress and other water industry unions entitled It’s Scotland’s Water that places the Scottish anti-privatisation campaign in an international context.

The paper warns that the ‘mutualisation’ of the water industry is “privatisation’s Trojan horse” and that the “mutual option would simply lead to the handing over of Scotland’s water to international financial instituitions.”

Unison Scottish organiser Dave Watson said: “World Water Day is an opportunity to express our solidarity with those in the developing world facing a water crisis exacerbated by the activities of the water privatisation lobby. And recognising the threat nearer home to a vital public service and to one of Scotland’s greatest assets”.
