Anger at Paisley name change Print E-mail
Tuesday, 07 August 2007

The decision to drop the Paisley name from the new university being formed from the merger of a number of colleges and higher education institutions in Scotland including the University of Paisley and Bell College, has been condemned by local MSP Hugh Henry.

Henry said that First Minister Alex Salmond’s refusal to prevent the merged entity calling itself the ‘University of West of Scotland’ amounted to a “betrayal” of Paisley and its people.

Henry said:

“Alex Salmond has sold out Paisley. He had the power to tell the University that dropping Paisley from its title was unacceptable. He has refused to intervene and has betrayed Paisley and its people.

“The SNP tried to say that Labour was going to sell out Paisley by allowing the name change. Of course this did not happen and what we do find out is that at the first opportunity the SNP has ditched their so called opposition and has sold Paisley short. This is shameful, but I should not be surprised at the SNP hypocrisy. The SNP can bluster all it likes, but the final decision came down to Alex Salmond and he has turned his back on Paisley its history. The name of Paisley is internationally recognised and the name change was opposed by Paisley graduates from all over the world.”
