Scottish Lib Dems face censure from Electoral Commission Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 July 2007

The Scottish Liberal Democrats have yet to submit their party accounts to the Electoral Commission and will be fined accordingly. The deadline for submitting the accounts was July 7. Embarrassingly for the Scottish Lib Dems, the only other major party not to have submitted their accounts is the far-right British National Party. The Co-Op Party submitted their accounts six days late and were fined £500. The penalty faced by the Scottish Lib Dems and BNP will depend on when they do finally submit their accounts.

The Commission today published the accounts of all parties and political accounting units reporting income or expenditure of over £250,000 in accordance with the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.

The Commission is cross-checking and scrutinising the accounts it has received, and raising discrepancies with the parties.

Peter Wardle, chief executive of the Electoral Commission said: “The accounts should be a key source of information for anyone wishing to find out more about how a political party is funded, and what it spends its money on. Without complete and open accounts, you cannot have full transparency about party finances.

“The rules on transparency are vital to public confidence and integrity in the democratic process. That’s why we are now taking a tougher approach to ensuring parties follow the rules, including fining parties who don’t submit their accounts on time and looking at how we can get parties to improve the ways in which they present their accounts.”
