Park welcomes aircraft carrier news Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 July 2007

Labour MSP John Park has today welcomed reports that the Rosyth dockyard is set to be awarded the contract to construct two aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy.

A former dockyard worker at Rosyth, the Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP paid tribute to former Labour MP Rachel Squire’s work in attracting contracts to Rosyth.

“If we are to believe media reports of this announcement then this is a great day for the Rosyth workforce and Scottish defence workers.  They thoroughly deserve to benefit from the aircraft carrier package and it will provide a fantastic economic boost for the local area, the yards on the Clyde and across Scotland. This award will vindicate the constructive approach to competitive challenges undertaken by the trade unions and the workforce since privatisation in 1987.

“It is also important to recognise the efforts of Rachel Squire MP in securing Rosyth’s survival during the dark days following the loss of the Trident contract in 1993. Rachel was undoubtedly the most effective campaigner on behalf of the Rosyth workforce and she would have been bursting with pride today knowing Rosyth was on the verge of such a significant contract.”
