Healthcare professionals will be able to apply for one-off grants of up to £5,000 as part of a scheme to encourage them to undertake humanitarian work in some of the world's poorest countries, the Scottish Executive announced today.
The grants are available to help pay for travel expenses, accommodation, equipment, in-country services, training and provisions.
However, in order to be successful applicants must demonstrate that their work: supports the efforts of Scottish-based healthcare professionals undertaking short term humanitarian work; is based in Sub-Saharan Africa and areas affected by the Asian Tsunami; and draws on the expertise of individuals or organisations based in Scotland who are skilled in planning or delivering health services and social care.
The grants are part of the Executive’s commitment to dedicate £50,000 a year for three years. This is the third round of grants from the Humanitarian Health Fund to be made; previous rounds distributed in November 2005 and December 2006.
Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture Linda Fabiani said: "I hope these grants will encourage Scotland's talented healthcare professionals to work with their colleagues in countries which face major health care challenges.
"The fund allows Scottish healthcare staff to share their expertise, working together to build a stronger health system for those who need it most."
The closing date for applications for these grants is 17 August 2007.
