Executive to help to save Dumfries House Print E-mail

The Scottish Executive has agreed to contribute £5 million through Historic Scotland in a plan to purchase Dumfries House and to preserve its unique collections.

It is joining a consortium of individuals and organisations brought together by the Prince of Wales, The total cost of the project is £45 million, most of which is has been borrowed by the Prince’s Charities Foundation.

It is being purchased from its current owner, the Marquis of Bute, who had previously planned to sell the contents of the house in the upcoming weeks.

The house and its contents are internationally renowned examples of 18th century Scottish craftsmanship. All of the furniture was made for the house by Thomas Chippendale, and Edinburgh furniture-makers William Mathie, Alexander Peter and Francis Brodie.

Dumfries House will be managed by the Great Steward’s Dumfries House Trust and will hopefully be open to the public next year. It is also hoped that the opening of Dumfries House will contribute to social and economic regeneration in East Ayrshire and South West Scotland.

Conservative communities spokesman Jamie McGrigor welcomed the news: "I have been actively campaigning on this matter in recent months, and challenged the Minister Linda Fabiani on this subject at Question Time only last Thursday.

"I am very glad that the Minister has now seen fit to listen to the many people across Scotland who have encouraged her to save this precious treasure which is a unique time capsule of the Scottish enlightenment.

"The furniture collection at Dumfries House, built specially for the house, is one of the very finest in Europe and to have seen the house asset-stripped would have left it as an impotent shell."
