John McFall, Labour and Co-operative Party MP for West Dunbartonshire, and chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, has received the Citizens Advice Parliamentarian of the Year award.
The award was presented for the first time to John at the national
charity’s annual parliamentary reception at the House of Commons today.
McFall was a volunteer in Dumbarton and District CAB in the mid 1970s before becoming the local MP.
As chair of the Treasury Select Committee, said the CAB, McFall did
much work on credit card transparency and also enabled 600 free cash
machines to be set up across the UK through his additional role as
chair of the ATM working group.
Kaliani Lyle, chief executive of Citizens Advice Scotland, said: "We
are very proud that a Scottish MP is the first parliamentarian to
receive this award. John McFall has worked tirelessly to improve the
lot of people who are financially excluded.
"He has persuaded cash machine providers and local authorities to work
together to improve access to free cash machines, and only last week
was able to report that more than one million people will benefit from
the free cash machines already installed and those that are planned.
"John has also spoken out on behalf of the Farepak victims,
highlighting the lack of consumer protection and calling for action
from the government, the OFT and the FSA to prevent it happening again.
We are delighted that the OFT has now launched its consumer awareness
campaign which the CAB service will be involved in and thank John for
his continued efforts in this area."
McFall said: "It is a great honour to have been recognised in this way
by the CAB service, which is an organisation for which I have immense
respect. They do tremendously worthwhile work throughout the whole of
the UK.
"A large element of the CAB service's work is on finance. The local CAB
is often the place of first resort when people find themselves in
difficulties. Whether it is mortgage payments, benefits, credit card
debts, pensions or hire purchase agreements, it is the CAB service
which attempts to ease the burden for people in financial difficulties."
