MSPs sign up fo farmers' campaign Print E-mail
Tuesday, 26 June 2007

Nearly a quarter of MSPs, including Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment Richard Lochhead, have signed up to support NFU Scotland’s "What’s on your plate?" campaign.

The campaign, which was launched at the Royal Highland Show last week, is encouraging people to buy Scottish produce by highlighting benefits such as food quality, high animal welfare and environmental production standards, reducing food miles and improving the health of the nation.

Jim McLaren, NFUS president, said: “The Show is always our best opportunity to reconnect the general public with agriculture and re-establish the link between farming and the food we enjoy every day of the year.

"I am delighted to have Mr Lochhead’s support. He has made clear his desire to support Scotland’s food and farming industries in moving forward and our campaign is aiming to do just that by galvanising public support.

"There will be many events happening in the coming months in towns, cities and communities up and down the country as farmers highlight the very best of local food and farming as part of the campaign."

Lochhead added: "Scotland is renowned for the quality of our produce and we are committed to supporting Scottish food and drink. Fresh seasonal produce is readily available on our doorstep and consumers are beginning to think more about the consequences of buying inferior quality alternatives.

"I hope the NFUS campaign will be a great step in helping to highlight this message and ensure the quality food Scotland is famous for continues to take pride of place on the dinner plates of the nation."
