Doctors target alcohol discounts Print E-mail
Monday, 25 June 2007

The British Medical Association in Scotland has called for action to be taken to stop the “deep discounting” of alcohol in supermarkets and off-licenses.

The move comes as part of a five-point plan to reduce the harm caused by alcohol outlined by Scottish doctors at the BMA’s annual UK Conference in Torquay.

Six people a day die from alcohol-related illnesses in Scotland, and Dr Peter Terry, chairman of the BMA in Scotland, said that low prices for alcohol have a major role to play.

“Worryingly, more and more teenagers are drinking at an earlier age and we must do more to combat this trend. Increasing price is one part of a strategy that can deter children from purchasing alcohol. The BMA would also like to see more done in primary schools to educate children about the dangers of drink before they are drawn in by industry advertising.

“After smoking, alcohol is next big public health priority and I want Scottish Ministers to work with doctors to end Scotland’s drink problem,” he said.

The BMA also wants to alcohol producers banned from sponsoring sporting and other events aimed at a young audience and legislation in place governing alcohol labeling instead of the current voluntary agreements with the industry.

Lets hope he has the guts to 'Go against the will of Parliament' or anyone else who would waste £1200 + million on projects that are not needed.

Get Bio Buses - 600 million would get Bio Buses for Edinburgh Glasgow Aberdeen Dundee etc. Comments like people working in Leith would get the Trams - Come on don't they think that the Trams will stop to pick up other people, thus causing more congestion in Leith walk and why dont they take the bus at the moment you can be up 'The Walk' in under 10 minutes from Junction Street any time of the day???

As for the Rail link 600 million is for STAGE 1 ONLY how much are STAGE 2 and STAGE 3 going to cost us. I wish MSP would care less about what other people think of Edinburgh and focus on what people will think about their criminal waste of good money.

If this decision goes through and they end up more white elephants for the Scottish herd then they should be held accountable for their decision

Lets have reality we are a small nation of 5 million and we need to show that we can run this country and stick to using every penny we have wisely.
