First Minister grilled over trams Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 June 2007

First Minister Alex Salmond faced questioning from Labour leader Jack McConnell and Liberal Democrat leader Nicol Stephen over his intention to scrap plans for a rail link to Edinburgh airport and a tram system for Edinburgh.

McConnell used the opportunity to criticise previous remark made by Salmond indicating that he would be prepared to ignore the will of Parliament and abolish the plans, while Nicol Stephen claimed that an investigation into the two projects was found to be financially sound.

The First Minister insisted, however, that he remains committed to voting in favour of scrapping the systems, highlighting comments made by the Auditor General that the projects suffer from poor governance.

Scottish Liberal Democrat Shadow Finance Secretary Tavish Scott earlier criticised remarks made by the Scottish Finance Secretary that appeared to question the validity of information given to Ministers about the Edinburgh trams project and the Edinburgh Airport Rail Link.

He accused the Scottish Government of confusion and called for clarification ahead of next week’s debate on the matter.

One must question the delaying tactics of the new administration on questioning the validity of the financial information of projects like the trams & airport link already submitted for scrutiny by the previous administration / parliament. If this SNP review finds the financial matters to be " ROBUST 2 does that mean that they will proceed with these projects or will they be politically motivated and go against the will of the parliament.
We shall observe with keen interest the " bun fight ".
