Europe votes to protect Scottish whisky branding Print E-mail

New rules protecting the production and labeling of spirits such as whisky and vodka were passed today by the European Parliament.

MEPs negotiated legislation on the definition, presentation and labelling of spirit drinks that will ensure that regional product labeling, such as Scottish Whisky and London Gin, will be protected.

Scottish MEP David Martin, who is also a member of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee, said: "This deal is vital for the Scottish Whisky industry to protect Scottish brands and distilleries worldwide against cheap imitations from overseas. This is good for Scottish trade and Scottish jobs."

Linda McAvan MEP, the Labour member of the Environment Committee who helped broker the deal, commented: "We have worked very hard to get a deal that enables British spirit manufacturers to make the most of Europe's single market. The current compromise, which is to label vodka, is supported by UK vodka industry and backed by Labour MEPs."

"This deal helps to secure British jobs in the spirits industry and is supported by British trade and manufacturing associations."
