A Scottish MEP has challenged the EU Fisheries Commissioner to take action over the proposed ship-to-ship oil transfers in the Forth Estuary.
Labour MEP Catherine Stihler was speaking after attending a conference
held today in Brussels which brought together Fisheries Commissioner
Joe Borg and a host of maritime decision makers from across the EU.
Stihler, Labour’s European Fisheries spokesperson and member of the
European Parliament’s Fisheries and the Regional Development committees
said: “For the last two years I have been raising the issue of
ship-to-ship transfers and the risk they pose to surrounding marine
eco-systems.
“Once and for all I want to see an end to these ridiculous proposals
which show Forth Ports being the benefactors and the sole decision
makers. It is unfair to the local residents who have been vocal in
their opposition and it is unfair to the countless species of marine
life that would suffer in the event of a spillage.
“As fisheries spokesperson, I have been an active campaigner in the
sustainability of our marine life. I have been encouraged by today’s
conference which sought pro-active and innovative solutions to the
problems of depleting fish stocks and threats to marine life through
such activities as ship-to-ship oil transfers.
“I await Commissioner Borg’s response to my questions with interest and
will report back to the campaigners, local residents and colleagues in
the Scottish Executive and European Parliament from all parties who
have fought so hard to put an end to this damaging proposal.”
