COSLA welcomes free personal care action Print E-mail
Friday, 15 June 2007

The chief of Scotland’s local authority grouping Pat Watters has welcomed Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon’s comments on free personal care.

Watters, who is president of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA), said that Sturgeon’s comments about the need for a review of some elements of the policy vindicated COSLAs stance.

“Scotland's councils are fully committed to Free Personal Care and see it as a defining policy of devolution. The tone and the language used by Nicola Sturgeon this afternoon is most welcome from a local government perspective with all of the issues we have been pressing for recognised and addressed in her statement.

“We welcome the recognition by the Cabinet Secretary that some of the outstanding legislative issues need to be dealt with before local authorities can implement this policy in the most effective way. The implementation issues all flow once you have secured fit for purpose legislation - that is a fundamental factor in the policy continuing to be a success. The vast majority of our elderly population who need free personal care get it and are happy with the care they receive and we in local government are fully committed to working with the Scottish government to see this continues and seek where possible even further improvements to the policy. Local government is fully committed to better outcomes for older people,” he said.
