The Scottish Conservative Party has criticised the SNP government over its position on the dualling of the A9. Conservative Deputy Leader Murdo Fraser said that he was disappointed by the position, which is to consider planning for the dualling of the A9, rather than a commitment to press ahead with the plan.
His statement came in the wake of a parliamentary answer. In response
to a question tabled by Fraser, the transport minister Stewart
Stevenson said that the government was “committed to planning for the
dualling of the A9. Options will emerge from the Strategic Transport
Projects Review, which is due to report next summer. We will consider
these options and take an informed decision on all the evidence
including costs and benefits. More detailed planning would follow that
decision-making process”.
Fraser said that, as a supporter of dualling the A9 he was disappointed with the answer.
“I am a strong supporter of dualling the A9 in its entirety from Perth
to Inverness, campaigning for a number of years on the issue and
launching a petition and website to dual the A9.
“It is a major disappointment that the SNP Government have refused to
commit to dualling the A9 from Perth to Inverness. Instead, the SNP
will only make a decision on whether or not to dual the A9 in Summer
2008 and that is after they have reviewed transport reports.
He has called for an immediate pledge from the SNP to dual the A9 in the summer of next year.
