Action urged on housing crisis |

Scotland’s economic growth and success depends on the new government meeting the parliament’s “radical pledge” to eradicate homelessness by 2012, according to the chair of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations.
Speaking ahead of the SFHA conference in Glasgow today, Brian Gegan
said: "The Scottish Parliament has pledged that everyone who needs a
home by 2012 will have one. That is a very radical pledge, supported by
all political parties, and one which we are whole-heartedly behind.
"But meeting this pledge will be a significant challenge. We need to
build more houses more quickly to make sure we can adequately meet the
needs of both young people and families. The SFHA believes we need at
least 30,000 new homes for rent by 2011. Housing associations have a
major role to play in this. Scotland's economic growth and success
depends on it. We will play an active and positive part in addressing
the crisis in affordability with the new administration."
The two-day conference will also feature Archie Stoddart, director of
Shelter, Brian Taylor, political editor of BBC Scotland, Professor John
Hills, of the London School of Economics and author of the recent
report on the future of Social Housing, and Carole Oatway, director of investment at Communities Scotland.

louise bowie, Unregistered All very well but if councils won't change their policies what hope do we have? I am in a 3 apt with my husband and 5 children I've been offered a transfer but told that if I move I will lose my good discount as I am not required to move by the council and I have been in my current home for 16 years. I had my home valued and on the same week the council approached me about a transfer after waiting many years on list. Convenient or what? I have been told overcrowding is not a reason to move and the council have given me one. I complained to my MP and was given a list of b&b and caravan parks!
