Edinburgh University students have welcomed the news that the university intends to retract the honorary degree awarded to Robert Mugabe at a meeting of the University´s Senate later today.
Tim Goodwin, president of Edinburgh University Students´ Association, said he was really proud that the university was "preparing to shed something that is little more than an embarrassment".
"When people think of evil and brutal dictators in a modern context one name always comes to mind: Mugabe. Now it looks like we´re going to sit up and do something about it."
The withdrawal of Mugabe´s honorary degree follows nearly two years of campaigning bythe Students´ Association, who passed policy at their 2005 Annual General Meeting to call for the university to strip him of his award.
Goodwin added: "This campaign has been student-led, and we´re really pleased to see it getting somewhere. We think it can make a positive difference to people in Zimbabwe as increasingly more institutions, as well as individuals, turn their backs on brutality. I only hope that other universities around the world who have similarly honoured Mugabe follow our lead."
