Orkney and Shetland Lib Dem MP Alistair Carmichael has welcomed news that the new EU Constitutional treaty may not relinquish control of marine conservation to Brussels.

Carmichael asked Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett in the House of Commons about the possibility of marine conservation being included in the deal as an EU responsibility.

Beckett replied: "Well, I would simply say that although I’m well aware that there are a string of issues on which various people have reservations, and on which they would like the opportunity to re-examine. I quite hope that something of that level of detail may not be in the amended treaty."

Carmichael said that Beckett’s response signalled a significant change in the government’s position on the issue:

"I hope that the Foreign Secretary shall pursue this matter and will not allow it to slip through the net like her predecessor."
