Secretary of State for Defence Des Browne today visited an Edinburgh school to observe work done by Skill Force, a charity run by ex-military personnel that aims to develop leadership skills in young people.
Initially aimed at young people having trouble at school, the program
has now been expanded to include all schoolchildren at Trinity Academy,
as well as another 40 schools across the UK.
Browne said: "This project teaches leadership skills. One thing that is
very obvious to me since I became Secretary of State for Defence is
that the military family understands leadership and they can teach
through people that have been living with leadership years for 22 years
the basic elements of it to young people like this who will go onto
become leaders in the community."
The programme is also beneficial for personnel leaving the armed
forces, who sometimes face difficulty reintegrating into civilian life
or finding employment, said Browne.
"It gives them an opportunity to see that their skills are
transferable. And we have an increasing number of people coming out of
the services who suffer from medical conditions or disabilities, as
people do in ordinary life and they have an opportunity through this to
see that they can get back into the workforce and engage."
