Capital politicians are today showing their support for Edinburgh’s tram scheme, which has come under threat from the new SNP administration, which feels the £592 million scheme diverts much needed funds from other transport projects.
MSPs and councillors from the Greens, Labour, Tories and Lib Dems
protested outside Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh alongside representatives
from organisations like Friends of the Earth, which organised the event.
FoE representative Mark Sydenham said: "A lot of work has gone into the
tram system, and there is clearly massive public support for the
scheme. There are no alternatives to Edinburgh's congestion problem
other than a modern tram system for our capital city."
City of Edinburgh Council Labour group transport spokesman Ricky Henderson said the
experience of other UK cities had shown trams provide reliable and
environmentally friendly transport:
"Other cities in the UK and Europe have proved that they work and the
evidence is that trams are popular, well used and make significant
contribution towards economic success."
The Greens said that the SNP’s position on trams had been a key reason
behind its decision not to enter into a formal coalition or confidence
and supply agreement with the Nationalists.
"This is the new politics in action. The SNP by necessity will need to
present a budget to Parliament which commands cross-party support. We
will work together constructively with the SNP administration on areas
of common interest, but where we disagree we will hold true to our
policy and stand by our principles," said Green co-convener Robin
Harper.
