EU announces mobile phone roaming charges cap Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 May 2007

The European Union’s plan to cap roaming mobile phone charges has been welcomed by Scottish Labour MEP Catherine Stihler.

The proposed deal on roaming will introduce a new "European Consumer Tariff" that automatically caps the cost of making a call at around 39p per minute including VAT this year, and falling further over the next two years, to around 19p.

Under the new rules, once a person arrives in another EU member state they will automatically receive a text message telling them how much they will be paying per minute to make and receive calls in that country, although sending text messages is not covered in the plan.

The Strasbourg vote was the result of a two-year campaign by MEPs to end rip-off charges for using mobile phones when on holiday or travelling in Europe.

Stihler said "This is a much fairer system with prices for making calls across Europe halved. There is much greater transparency about what the charges are. Consumers will receive texts telling them exactly how much they are paying when using their phone in other EU countries."

“This is the first big step in our campaign, and we will now turn our attention to tackling the massive overcharging for sending text messages while in other European countries.

“Consumers should be warned that costs for these services are still excessive. We will work with consumer groups to ensure that the law is really delivering cheaper prices.

“Industry chiefs have received a wake – up call over their unacceptable over-charging. It is a great shame that they had to be forced to deliver a better deal."
