First Minister Alex Salmond has agreed to consider Green suggestions that issues like social justice and sustainable development form part of the agenda for his new Council of Economic Advisers to examine.
Green MSP Patrick Harvie said the Greens shared the SNP aim of having
independent economic advisers but urged Salmond to take other measures
such as the impact on people’s quality of life, general well being and
the environment into account when making economic decisions.
Harvie said: “I welcome the First Minister's agreement that the social
and environmental impact of economic growth is important, and that
specific expertise in this area must be brought into his Council of
Advisers.
"Increasingly, people from across the political spectrum accept that
the pursuit of unsustainable economic growth on a planet of finite
resources causes social and environmental harm, including climate
change, poverty and health inequalities.
"We welcome the new minority government in Scotland placing
environmental issues at the top of its agenda, and for recognising this
as a moral imperative. Greens will press them every day in the Scottish
Parliament to live up to these commitments, and to change any aspects
of their programme which are not consistent with the aspiration of
creating a greener Scotland."
