Thursday, 24 May 2007

Moray MP Angus Robertson has been elected the SNP’s new leader at Westminster in the wake of Alex Salmond’s ascension to First Minister in the Scottish Parliament.

Robertson previously served as Salmond’s deputy in the House of Commons and most recently directed the successful SNP Scottish parliament election campaign. He will retain his role as SNP foreign affairs and defence spokesman and at 37, is the youngest leader of a political party at Westminster.

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie has been appointed deputy SNP group leader and chief whip at Westminster.

Robertson said: "The SNP group will work closely with First Minister Alex Salmond and the new Scottish government to deliver the more successful Scotland people voted for in the recent historic elections.

"We will also work constructively with other parties to secure more responsibilities for Scotland as the country progresses to independence, the natural state for so many similar nations."
